La Gargote

3 rue Saint Louis

34600 Bédarieux

04 67 23 79 12

This small restaurant on the left of the narrow street on the way in to the centre of Bédarieux from the Hérépian  or La Tour sur Orb roads has had a chequered career in recent years. For some time it was the Pili Pili, serving crêpes and other snacks, then, two years ago, a young couple took it over under the title “Evan” but, alas, didn’t make a go of it.

Now another young couple have reopened it as a very pleasant, mid-market restaurant, under the name “La Gargote” - which translates as  “greasy spoon” in English! “C’est ironique,” the patron, Ludovic Mouliy, told us, with a grin!

It has just a couple of set menus, reasonably priced, with relatively few choices. The food was excellent and was beautifully presented in a very convivial atmosphere. It isn’t a gourmet establishment - it has only a few local wines, for instance, again at very fair prices - but serves splendid French cuisine.

It has small ground floor dining room with a larger basement room but we ate at one of the three tables perched rather precariously on the pavement, with traffic passing within arms length!

Recommended - and we will return.

Hello,

Thanks for taking the time to write about the article you found insulting.

We thought there would be more individuals who misunderstood the humor of the article, however, your complaint is surprisingly the only one we have received. And boy do we get a lot of criticism here at BBB.

We are a non profit organisation, run by volonteers who enjoy putting together a fun magazine that a lot of people find interesting. Over the years we have published lots of articles that have provoked lots of people to contact us.

The last paragraph of the article you found insulting clearly states:

But don't take this game seriously. Its only a bit of fun. Truth is we have much to thank these visitors for - apart from their entertainment value! The money they bring to the Languedoc ensures that the lovely little towns and villages here survive. They pay the rent on restaurants so that we have a wonderful choice all year round. They keep the airports, railways, car rental companies, gites, hotels, etc, etc, going, and hundreds of thousands in work.

The article wasn't meant as an insult, and we are sorry you took it this way. And we do hope that there were other articles of interest in the BBB.

Nik

Newbie here, and looking for some advice on whether to buy a second hand car or not. I have a small place in Cap d'Agde which i go to every July and also for a week with my friends in September. As i pay about £400 for 3 weeks in July , £120 for week in September and £60 annual excess insurance(would alsolike a weekend every now and again but car rental seems so dear) so is it more economical to buy an old banger. Plus if so does anybody know of anywhere cheap to keep it near carcassone airport when im not there. Or is there such a thing as car share for fellow minded peole in Agde direction who dont go in July

he arrived from nowhere, at least that's what the locals in mouréze say.

Since last fall he seems to have taken up residence at the bridge leading into town.

Rumour has it that a local woman known for her attributes sorcière has taken to feeding and visiting him.

It seems too good to believe, the goat who guards the gateway to the mountain village. anyone have any

Topic : Le projet de la ZAC de la Salamane Clermont L'Hérault

Submitted on behalf of Diana Sawday:

THE SALAMANE ZAC

The following project is something that will affect us all living here in the area. Do we want it to happen? Is this the right choice for Clermont L'Hérault? Will the project really offer the employment that it promises?
How much have we been told and how can we find out?
This land is perfect agricultural land and could be transformed into a market gardening project producing fresh vegetables for the local community, schools, old people's homes, and hospitals.
Just imagine the number of enormous trucks on the roads, polluting and adding extra danger to our fragile environment. Do we want our vineyards transformed into hectares of asphalt and monstrous buildings?

Find out what is happening on the blog below, sign the petition, help us save our beloved Hérault! We don't need this.

· que ce projet soit suspendu ;
· qu'un véritable débat public s'instaure ;
· que les terres de la Salamane conservent leur vocation agricole ;

For me this is the best white wine around. Le Petit Roubie is particularly good and bio too. Picpoul is the must-have wine to go with fruit de mer. I also enjoy the special "Neptune" bottle the wine comes in with waves around the neck.

This is a traditional French restaurant in a very old building that used to be the bishop of Agde's Summer retreat. The food is delicious and there's a wide range of menus. The chef is Mark, half-English. They have a large open fire at this time of year which is very welcoming. http://www.restaurant-levieuxlogis.com/

I've found it too. It was recommended to me by a friend who's a genuine foodie - he imports fine foods into the UK. From previous places he's told me about I was expecting something much posher. The food, however, was really good and the guys there are friendly.

Benoit Estrangin helponline@orange.fr

When annual income is declared, income for unfurnished lets is entered in the section ‘revenus fonciers’ on the form. Income from furnished lets goes under ‘Benefices Industriels et Commerciaux’ better known as BIC. This applies to both professional and private landlords.

Exemptions are : furnished room/rooms in your principle residence let at a fixed reasonable rent - at the moment  €124 per square meter per year - and weekly or monthly lets of chambres d’hotes producing no more than €760 per year.

Micro entreprises (Micro BIC or Micro-loueurs) is the fiscal classification for owners of furnished lets producing no more than €32,000 per year. Owners have the right to 50% untaxed. The income includes everything paid by the tenant - rent plus charges.

Technically the owners have to keep an account book with the details of the furnished flats. The reduced fiscal obligation also means that owner has to fill in only the printed ‘déclaration complementaire de revenus' and mark the total in the column ‘Revenus Industriels et Commerciaux non professionnels’ . The tax office will automatically calculate the tax rebate of 50%.

Modifications since Jan 1st 2009

For certain lets - Gites ruraux, official chambres d’hotes and those classed  'meublés de tourisme' by the authorities owners can ask to be classed as such and are graded according to comfort, location etc) the yearly income can be up to € 80, 000 and is 71% tax free.

These categories are privileged  because they promote rural accommodation for let and maintain high standards, requiring investment from the owners. The drawback is that if the operation makes no profit (charges superior to income  from lettings) the 50% tax is still due on the lettings as it doesn’t take charges into consideration.

It may be better to choose the Regime Reel. In this regime, received rent, costs and  charges can be deducted as well as, with the necessary proof, the costs and charges to acquire and maintain the building - interest on a loan, maintenance and repair costs. Also business costs such as advertising, agency costs, and taxe professionnelle if applicable.

A few reminders :
Furnished lets are not subject to TVA except when serviced - breakfast, cleaning and linen changes.
Taxe Professionnelle, which is due to be abolished, is not payable on personal residences, primary or secondary. The calculation of the tax is very complicated and based on the rental value of the accommodation multiplied by a tax factor fixed by the commune.

At first I thought I hadn’t heard right.

“On n’accepte plus l’espece.”

This at BNP, Banque Nationale de Paris! We‘d just arrived for our annual winter sojourn in the maison de village we‘ve owned for eleven years. We needed to deposit Euros into the French account we have maintained for as long. The clerk ,who has seen my face many times, explained that henceforth a depositor must slide a Carte Bleu into a slot‘for identity’ and then feed the cash into the maw of the machine. There is no alternative.

The only branch of BNP that has retained a traditonal guichet is in Montpellier, and even then in only one location! Right.

I’m going to trust that my hard- earned cash will be safely stored and recorded. Whom should I consult if there is a power failure in the middle of a transaction? (Ever hear of a thunderstorm?) How about compromise of passwords? Furthermore, the Carte Bancaire which is essential as an identifier has an annual fee, which means I am paying the bank to deposit and use my money. Why put up with this?

Apparently le chomage is not as great an issue in France as they say. The machine must count as an employee. I‘m no Luddite, and enjoy the march of electronic progress as much as the next person. But I do appreciate SERVICE. My solution was to close the account and go elsewhere. But how long before other banks follow suit? Only if consumers begin to “vote with their feet” can we get their attention.

Perhaps these are the same people who decide to put rond points in the areas where they are not needed..

An eating out treat is not all about the food. The Close de Maussanne is not a restaurant but a table d’hôte so you have to make a reservation. The venue has five rooms on the upper floors for rent, which, unfortunately, we didn’t get to see, and most of the people in the dining area were staying overnight.
But the location was a refreshing change from the usual restaurants we see in the heart of a town. This former convent is set back off the national between Servian and Béziers. It's easy to miss as the sign post is barely visible from the road and if you're coming from the Pezenas direction, it's easy to miss altogether. I’ve driven past this place a million times and I’ve always wondered what it was! Keep your eyes wide open.

We knocked on the door and were greeted by the owner. The unpretentious façade gave no indication of what lay behind. Green grass, an inviting swimming pool, lounge chairs, the most inviting terraced garden I’ve seen in a while. We walked through the hallway, round the garden and were shown to a cozy fire place where we were offered champagne as an aperitif. Fabulous!

The décor, the setting, the service were just right. There were no menus to peruse; the waitress recited the two choices for each course. This was very different to a restaurant. There were no prices either. The meal was fine, although at 45€ per person I expected much more originality from the chef.
However, there was more than enough to eat, with a decent cheese dish, but the meal lacked the pizzazz that buzzed all around us. The wine list was short but sweet, it even boasted champagne without sulphur (at an unfathomable price). We went for a Leon Barral that was decanted and thoroughly delicious.

The owner, Bruno, has done an excellent job of renovating this convent. It is sumptuous and worth a trip. Even though the meal in itself was mediocre, the whole experience won us over. It's expensive, granted, but worth saving up for a special treat out. My editor keeps telling me to find restaurants in a lower price range, but hidden gems like this one are worth talking about! Go on - treat yourself!

Villeneuvette is a royal factory which means it was endorsed in the XVII century by the king to produce clothing and linen for the royal court and king’s army.  A small part of these buildings host now the hotel restaurant of La Source.  It is a gorgeous setting in a park with pool, tennis court and a nice stream to release any tension you may have acquired during the day. The owner, for more than 20 years now, welcomes you in a sumptuous, classy set-up room with huge stones arches.  Classic French cuisine with choice of meat or fish dish with a perfect attention to details is served in original and elegant kitchenware.

If you are a bit difficult and do not eat either meat or fish, then the cook has the talent to design a special plate that will make you feel like a special guest. It will also make your partner start to envy you.  The desserts give that final touch to your evening that make you think you should come back and even try a night to discover the hotel!

Perfect service, great food, wonderful and warm surrounding for this family owned business with a very good price/quality ratio.

3 menus 27€, 31€ and 39€.  40€ to 50€ for a full meal à la carte.  The wine list has the main best local domains with a good selection of ½ bottles that makes lot of sense nowadays.

“Ban” in French has many meanings and the most known is “an official publication” usually used for wedding.  “Gourmands” means food lovers.

Therefore, for the last 13 years this typical bistrot is hidden near the modern St Francois Church on the other side of the train station, an old popular neighbourhood which still has an authentic feeling.  A restaurant with the same owners with an assiduous clientele did definitely deserve a visit!

Warm friendly welcome totally laidback, old heavy fabric behind the door to keep the cold out, beautiful stone wall on one side then a huge stone fireplace unfortunately not working anymore in the middle, just to put you in perfect mood to order and start to enjoy the evening.  My friend being a extreme vegetarian (no meat, no fish no seafood) the test immediately was to ask if a dish could be arranged for him? (the menu at 28€ “land side” or “sea side” was clear enough what to expect).

No problem, my friend will be treated with a gorgeous plate filled with vegetable mousse and other crusty “feuilletés” absolutely delicious.  For me, I was perfectly pleased with Corsican pig meat (he is Parisian, she is Corsican) that let’s you imagine and feel the smell of the wild “garrigue” over there!
Cheese plate (five kind) for me and desserts plate (five kind too) for my friend, plenty for both of us, made for greedy ones “gourmands” like us especially for me since I almost fought to finish both plates by my own!

I totally forgot to check the wine list so in trust I was to follow the advice of my host, a white Corsican wine for aperitif and a red one for the meal (produce by the family in the island).
But before leaving, while we had a chat with the chef, I realize that many bottles from the best Languedoc wines were resting next to the kitchen.  While we were talking I also understood thru their words that Jacques and Catherine love their job and the card from the restaurant “made with fresh products” or “cuisine du marché” tells it all!

A marvellous place to go with a perfect name!  I forgot the price, 76,50 € for two all included deserved a real big tip so we were pleased.
