How You Can Help

Brick Fundraiser

A Great Gift That Gives Back

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to be part of Nutmeg’s history. Give a tribute that will last for decades.

An engraved brick is a great way to mark a special occasion, dedication, or to remember a loved one, whether two- or four-legged.

Nutmeg Spay/Neuter Clinic is able to provide reduced cost spay/neuter surgery and related services by having the support from individual and corporate donors, grants, and other fundraising efforts. We partner with other non profits to address complex challenges and further our mission. We are among a community of caring individuals and groups who work together to help end the problem of overpopulation. Our partners contribute more than money – their volunteer power, shared passion, and in-kind support help us support our local community. Nutmeg Clinic is grateful for every donation. On behalf of every family and furry friend who benefits from your kindness and generosity, we thank you. Please explore the options how you can contribute and please consider helping our cause.

Are you adept in graphic design, crafts, or social media? Do you have experience in the veterinary field? We would love to meet you! We are hopping 7 days a week (even when we aren't open for surgery), and we could always use a hand! Please email info@nutmegclinic.org and request more information!

Pets for Life

The Pets for Life philosophy recognizes that a love of pets transcends socio-economic boundaries, and no one should be denied the opportunity to experience the benefits and joy that comes from the human-animal bond.

Pets enhance humans’ lives, and everyone who chooses should have the opportunity to experience the unconditional love and meaningful relationship a pet brings. The bond people have with their pets should not depend on income, the zip code they in, or the language they speak. Everyone who wants to provide a loving home to animals deserves access to the resources that help keep pets happy and healthy. At Nutmeg, we break down the barriers many pet owners face to help keep pets happy and healthy in the homes they have.

Since 2012, our clinic has performed more than 48,000 spay/neuter surgeries to stop overpopulation for cats and dogs. Surgery at our clinic is at reduced rates to all clients, and we also accept State vouchers for payment. Perhaps our most impactful contribution is to the companion animals living within our underserved and impoverished households. It is for these companion dogs and cats that we provide our services free of charge.

Your tax deductible donation will help families in need and their pets live together for life!
Please donate what you can now – every contribution helps.

On April 17, 2019, Nutmeg Spay/Neuter Clinic was awarded the coveted “Pets for Life Community Cup” by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)! As an official mentorship of the Pets for Life (PFL) initiative, and the first of its kind in Connecticut, Nutmeg Spay/Neuter Clinic was recognized by the HSUS for building positive relationships and establishing strong community outreach in the spirit of the PFL program. Our clinic was awarded as ‘the organization that has connected with their community in profound ways and truly loves people'.

Pets and Families We Serve

Through the program, we provide free spay/neuter services, wellness care, pet supplies, transportation support, and share information with residents of our focus areas, the 06607 and 06608 zip codes.

Within these zip codes, which are the most underserved in Bridgeport, Connecticut, nearly 35% of residents are below the poverty level and the median household income is just over $30,000, well below the State average. Also, there are next to no pet resources in the immediate area, such as veterinary clinics or big box stores. Approximately 63% of residents are Latino and 30% are African American. Furthermore, the percentage of renters in this area is more than double the state average. Often, renting forces families with pets to pay higher rates, or more distressing, forces families to give up their beloved companion.

Through our outreach, we have discovered that most pets met are unaltered and 96% of pet owners in this geographic area have never contacted an animal service agency. This statistic further illustrates the lack of connection to service providers in underserved communities.

Since implementing the program in late 2017, we have already made a positive, transformational change for the people and pets of Bridgeport. Since late 2018, we have served over 2,400 individual pets, and given more than 10,050 medications, services, and other supplies at no cost to families. The conversion rate, which is the number of pets spayed or neutered out of all the unaltered pets met through Nutmeg Clinic, is 83%. This metric further illustrates that lack of access to resources is a primary roadblock to veterinary care in this community, proving wrong the long-held misconception that this segment of the population is opposed to the spay/neuter procedure.
